What to buy When...

... Your friend has a baby...

So your friend has a baby and you want to get her a gift but where should you start? There are all sorts of gifts you can get for the baby but what about mum?  What does she need? What's useful?  Here's some things that I've bought for friends in the past and some that I have eye on for future mummy friends, so if you're a friend of mine and having a baby look away now!!

Tea
A nice bundle of lovely tasty caffeine free teas. Teapigs teas are yummy and feel indulgent so if they're avoiding caffeine they don't have to miss out on taste. Teapigs put this "cheeky" bundle together for you but you can also put together a sample pack for them or choose individual boxes.

Scarf
Scarves are a great gift for a new mum as they are so versatile. They can help when trying to discreetly feed your baby or simply be used to try and cover up a "mummy tummy".  This deer scarf is on my current wishlist as it is gorgeous and only £10!  Maybe I can justify it as a "back to work" present to myself?!
Jewellery
To mark the occasion of a newborn you might like to buy some jewellery to celebrate.  But bear in mind that in a few months this peaceful newborn will be pulling and tugging at everything so its best to try and give something "practical".  Practical can still be pretty!  Check out these beautiful stud earrings.

Bath Goodies
Cowshed do a lovely mum and baby range - I know because one of our lovely friends bought me some when Isabella was born.  This maternity set has everything they will need for pampering.  It may have been created for expectant mums but it will still be a good present for a new mum.  Trust me when I say keep moisturising after the baby has arrived as well as before!
Food
If your friend is a foodie then she will probably be craving all the things that were forbidden during pregnancy.  A food basket full of pate, blue cheese, soft cheese and goats cheese with a big french baguette will go down a treat!  You can either put it together yourself or local cheese shops may have hampers for you.  This new mum box from Cheeseworks in Cheltenham is a winner! Ooh just looking at is making me hungry!

Much like cheese your friend maybe craving some alcohol, why not treat her to some bubbles or whatever is her favourite.  She may not drink it until sleep is less of a novelty but she'll be glad it's there when the time is right.

Candles
I love luxury candles but they are a luxury and not something I generally treat myself to whilst also not very practical if you also have a toddler.  But if your friend is a first time parent a luxury candle can be a great present as they look great, can last for ages and also create an uplifting ambiance which is sometimes needed with hormones flying around!

Book
I've stayed clear of baby products on the list but this book is great for new mums.  It's not a book about routines or what you should / shouldn't do but it is a book that takes you through each week of the babies life for the first 6 months.  It clearly goes through what you can expect in terms of sleeping and eating and when to worry (or not).  It maybe a welcome accompaniment to a cup of gorgeous teapigs tea for your friend!

Hope this list is useful to you and provides some inspiration when shopping for a new mum!
